Water and Wildlife

Water and Wildlife

This activity introduces the idea of competition between the needs of wildlife and humans.

Introduction

Just like people, animals and plants need water to survive. Animals that live in dry areas are often adapted so that they can survive for longer periods of time between having to drink. Even if an animal is adapted to a very dry climate, it must still find water regularly. To help them find water, animals may keep mental maps of the location of areas where they can find water.

Activity

Imagine you are a Saiga. Where can you find fresh water to drink?

1. As a group, draw a map on a large piece of paper or a blackboard showing where saiga can find fresh water to drink in your area.

2. What other animals need these sources of water?

3. Do people use these sources of water?

4. What issues might that have for wildlife including saiga?
