This study was designed to examine the nursing patterns and
related behavior of young saiga raised by their dams at San Diego
Wild Animal Park.
Ungulates have a long history of captive propogation dating back to 9000 - 7000 BC, but the saiga stand out in their persistent failure to adapt to captivity outside their natural areas of distribution.

The International workshop on captive breeding for saiga conservation was co-hosted by the Saiga Conservation Alliance, San Diego Zoo Global and the Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and took place over 28th-29th August 2017
